Langkahan Residents Express Satisfaction with Ministry of Public Works Temporary Shelters, Especially for Children
Banda Aceh (ANTARA) – Residents affected by the flash floods in Rumoh Rayeuk village, Langkahan sub-district, North Aceh regency, have expressed their satisfaction and comfort in living in the temporary shelters (huntara) built by the Ministry of Public Works (PU), especially for their children. “Alhamdulillah, we are happy to live here, and the children are also very happy, as there is a place for them to play,” said Wani Safrianti, one of the residents of the PU’s huntara in Rumoh Rayeuk, North Aceh, on Tuesday. Wani made the statement when questioned by the Minister of Public Works, Dody Hanggodo, during his visit to the Rumoh Rayeuk huntara in Langkahan, North Aceh. The visit was to ensure the readiness of the shelters for the disaster-affected residents and to expedite their use before Eid. Speaking to the media, Wani also said that she felt comfortable staying in the huntara, and they no longer had to suffer from the heat compared to living in a camp or evacuation tent. “It’s more comfortable here in the huntara than in the camp, especially since there are fans when it’s hot,” she said. She explained that the flash floods at the end of November 2025 had caused them to lose their homes, which were swept away by the floodwaters. Since then, they had been forced to stay in evacuation tents for about a month, and they were only moved to the huntara, which was built by the Ministry of Public Works and constructed by Waskita Karya, 20 days ago. “We have only been in the huntara for 20 days; before that, we were in the camp for a month and a half. Because our house is no longer there. If we had a house, we would still live in our own home,” she said. She added that while staying in the huntara, she and the other housewives spent their time cooking, relaxing, and taking care of their children. Meanwhile, the husbands worked in the nearby palm oil plantations. “Before, when we were at home, I had a small business raising goats, but now we don’t have any livestock left,” said Wani Safrianti. For information, the Ministry of Public Works has built a total of 44 blocks, or 528 huntara units (12 units per block), in North Aceh regency. Specifically, in Rumoh Rayeuk, Langkahan sub-district, five blocks have been completed, and nine other blocks are still under construction. Technically, the huntara units are built using a modular system with a lightweight steel frame structure, which allows the construction process to be carried out quickly and efficiently without compromising quality and comfort. Each unit is designed using insulated panels and is equipped with ventilation, exhaust fans, and fans to maintain good air circulation and prevent the rooms from getting too hot. In addition to the housing units, the area is also equipped with supporting facilities such as communal toilets, washing areas, a shared kitchen, electricity and lighting installations, and clean water and sanitation systems. These facilities are intended to ensure that residents can continue to carry out their daily activities properly while staying in the huntara.
