Landslides affect more villages

PEMALANG, Central Java: Landslides, like the one which recently killed nine people and seriously injured three at the foot of Mount Kupit, are occurring in several other areas in the regency as well.

A major landslide occurred in Cikadu subdistrict last weekend, destroying several houses and forcing 190 people to leave their endangered homes.

The landslide in Cikadu occurred due to heavy rain, which washed soil down from the hillside above the village, the chief of the Pemalang regency social services office, Mardihardjo, said.

He said the landslide in Cikadu caused no injuries, but many houses were slanting and too dangerous to use. He added that the government planned to resettle the affected families. (pan)
