Landslide kills two in Padang

PADANG, West Sumatra: Two workers were feared dead after being buried alive while two others sustained severe injuries in a landslide in Bukit Ngalau, Indarung, Padang on Tuesday.

The accident took place in the morning following a night's downpour at a silica quarry.

Silica is a material used in cement production by the nearby cement plant owned by PT Semen Padang.

As of Tuesday evening, excavators which had been rushed to the scene had not yet dug out the bodies of Darmis, 50, a Semen Padang employee, and Rudi, 22, a heavy equipment operator working for a contractor at the site.

Another Semen Padang employee, Arwin, 47, and Suwarsono, 26, an employee of a subcontractor, were rescued and are now in the hospital in Padang. (28)
