Landslide kills husband, wife

PADANG, West Sumatra: A landslide has hit areas on the slope of Turki Hill in Padang city, claiming the lives of husband and wife Eri, 36 and Esi, 34.

The disaster at dawn on Monday happened after prolonged heavy rain over the past few days, said Afrizal, an official with the Padang Social and Disaster Mitigation Agency.

Several witnesses said that they heard thunderous sounds as parts of the hill collapsed onto Eri's house at 3.30 a.m. His wife Esi was in an advanced stage of pregnancy. -- Antara
