Landslide kills four in Bali

DENPASAR, Bali: Two consecutive landslides at two separate locations in Karangasem regency here over the weekend killed four people, including four-year-old twin boys.

"Heavy rain eroded the soil and caused the landslide," Karangasem Police chief Lt. Col. I.B. Wirama said on Monday.

The first landslide occurred on Saturday night at Gesing village in Selat district. The collapsing walls of mud struck the house of Wayan Darmayasa, who broke his arm when he tried to save his twin children.

The twins, identified as I Wayan Budiasa and I Kadek Budiasa, and their nanny Ni Kadek Yasa, 16, died after being buried in the mud.

The second landslide on Sunday buried a house in Langsat village in Rendang district and killed a seven-year-old boy, I Nyoman Sunardi.

Local officials visited the accident sites on Sunday and distributed Rp 250,000 for each victim. The officials also warned the residents of further possible landslides.

"The districts of Rendang, Selat, Sidemen and Abang are prone to landslides as the soil is very unstable," Wirama said. (50/edt)
