Landslide blocks road in West Java

MAJALENGKA, West Java: Access to the main road connecting Majalengka and Kuningan regencies in West Java was cut off due to a landslide in Cimeong subdistrict, Majalengka regency.

The road has been blocked since dawn on Tuesday, preventing residents in the two regencies from traveling between the two areas. Mud was seen covering the road for the length of one kilometer. No fatalities or damage to buildings were reported due to the incident.

The depth of the mud varied. In some spots, the mud was 50 centimeters deep, but in other spots, it reached up to 150 centimeters deep. The landslide occurred on Tuesday after torrential rain pounded the hill in the Cimeong subdistrict. The landslide seemed a probable consequence of denudation as there was hardly any vegetation seen on the hill.

Majalengka administration officials began to deploy excavators to remove the mud from the road on Tuesday afternoon. Dozens of trucks were deployed as well to carry away the mud.

As of Tuesday night, the road was still impassable. -- JP
