A landslide at the operational area of PT QMB, located within the PT Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP) compound in Morowali, Central Sulawesi, occurred on Wednesday afternoon (18 February).

Several pieces of heavy equipment were buried, and one worker was found dead beneath the landslide debris by a joint search and rescue team.

"One victim was found by the SAR team, confirmed dead," said Palu Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) chief Muh Rizal in a statement on Wednesday.

The landslide occurred at approximately 3.15pm local time. Upon receiving the report, Rizal said a joint SAR team was immediately deployed to the site.

"The SAR team continues to monitor the location to ensure there are no further victims, and is coordinating with the company," he said.

Separately, PT IMIP Head of Media Relations Dedy Kurniawan stated that the landslide occurred in the IMIP 9 waste dump area.

At the time of the incident, Dedy said the Quick Response Centre (QRC) team on the ground immediately halted all activities.

"Workers were immediately evacuated to safe points while awaiting a thorough investigation by the Central Sulawesi Provincial Labour Inspection and Occupational Health and Safety Authority (Binwasnaker)," Dedy said.

The incident caused several units of heavy equipment, including excavators, bulldozers, and dump trucks, to be swept away by the landslide.

"The preliminary cause is suspected to be soft ground conditions in the lower area. Several excavators, bulldozers, and dump trucks were carried away by the landslide," Dedy said.

For the time being, Dedy said the company is conducting a thorough investigation following the disaster.

"The IMIP team and relevant authorities continue to work at full capacity to carry out a comprehensive investigation. The QRC is a task force aimed at integrating emergency response functions across all tenants within the industrial park," he said.
