Landscape Business Grows Amid Green Economy Trend
The trend towards a green economy and the rising need for green open spaces (RTH) in urban areas are driving the growth of the landscape and plant nursery business in Indonesia. PT Bandar Pohon Indonesia is one of the companies taking advantage of this opportunity through landscape design services and plant nurseries.
Founder of PT Bandar Pohon Indonesia, Hizrah Maulana, stated that the company, which has been operating for two years, provides greening services for segments ranging from residential to commercial projects and urban areas.
“This company focuses on providing greening solutions for various needs, from homes to large-scale projects,” he said.
On a macro level, business opportunities in this sector are propelled by the increasingly developing green economy trend. Studies on the green economy indicate that investment in greening and landscape restoration can create up to 40 jobs for every US$1 million invested, or twice as many as in conventional sectors.
On the other hand, the need for green open spaces in urban areas remains a challenge. In DKI Jakarta, for example, the proportion of green open spaces has decreased from 33.7% in 2000 to around 19.5% in 2020 due to land conversion and urbanisation. This situation opens up market opportunities for landscape businesses to provide greening solutions amid limited land availability.
Hizrah believes that increasing public awareness of environmental quality and health is also driving demand for greening services. This demand comes from various sectors, such as housing, hospitality, cafes, and government projects.
Operationally, the company manages a nursery area of around 20 hectares in Bogor to ensure a steady supply of plants. In addition, the company partners with communities by purchasing plants from local cultivation, thereby creating additional economic value at the local level.
To maintain quality, the company involves agricultural experts in plant management and pest control.
More broadly, the development of greening-based businesses also aligns with the sustainable development agenda and enhancing national economic competitiveness. Government planning documents emphasise that the green jobs sector has the potential to create economic added value while strengthening Indonesia’s competitiveness in the global market.
“The prospects for the landscape business will continue to grow in line with the increasing need for healthy and sustainable environments. Looking ahead, the company targets expansion into the tourism sector and the development of areas based on green city concepts,” said Hizrah.
