Land Subsidence Causes North Kayu Mas Road in Pulogadung to Collapse
The Head of Pulogadung Ward, Ariyanto, stated that the collapse of Jalan Kayu Mas Utara was caused by land subsidence. As a result, that stretch of road cannot be traversed by two-wheeled or four-wheeled vehicles. Motorists are directed to use alternative routes. “Initial information indicates land subsidence, and information from the East Jakarta Water Resources Sub-Department (SDA) also reports an occurrence in Jatinegara Kaum Ward, starting with cracks at the site,” Ariyanto said when contacted on Thursday (26/3/2026). Ariyanto emphasised that the East Jakarta SDA Sub-Department plans temporary handling by installing dolken wood to prevent the land surface from being further eroded by the flow of the Kali Sunter River. He added that constructing the embankment is the responsibility of the Ministry of Public Works because the Kali Sunter is under the Ciliwung Cisadane River Basin Organisation (BBWSCC). After the embankment is completed, the Roads Department will proceed with road repairs. Jalan Kayu Mas Utara, precisely beside the Kali Sunter, collapsed on Saturday (21/3/2026) and remains impassable to vehicles to this day. Local residents have erected barriers at the end of the road to prevent vehicles from entering the hazardous area. Pedestrians are still allowed to pass but must exercise caution. The road collapse is suspected to have been triggered by the erosion of the soil retaining wall on the side of the Kali Sunter due to high rainfall that increased the river’s flow rate. “Since Saturday, 21 March, in the morning vehicles, angkot minibuses, and motorbikes could still pass. Then in the afternoon cracks appeared, towards evening it collapsed and became impassable. It was then marked with barriers,” said Kasiyah, a local resident.
