Lampung projects left in a mess
BANDAR LAMPUNG: Several reconstruction projects for a regency damaged by a major earthquake in 1994, funded by the state budget and foreign aid, have been left in a mess, Antara reported Saturday.
The repair work of a six kilometer road, football field, renovated mosques, houses and other infrastructure in Liwa, West Lampung was considered poor. About Rp 950 million (US$270,000) of the state budget and Rp 400 million in foreign aid had been allocated to the project.
The news agency said the road in Way Mengaku subdistrict, which was repaired using Asian Development Bank funds, had again been damaged and no cars or motorcycles could pass.
A town park, Taman Hantu Biuh, allocated Rp 800 million from the state budget for repair work, was also in a mess, Antara said.
Liwa, the regency's capital, was rocked by an earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale in 1994. The disaster killed more than 200 people and left thousands homeless. (aan)
