Lampung meets requirements for Indonesia's first aircraft carrier to dock
The Commander of the 4th Marine Infantry Brigade, Marine Colonel Kanang Budi Raharjo, has stated that Lampung Province meets the requirements for the docking of Indonesia’s first aircraft carrier, the Giuseppe Garibaldi. He confirmed that the Lampung Naval Base is planned to be one of the berthing locations for the vessel because the waters around Lampung satisfy the necessary conditions for an aircraft carrier. The construction of the carrier dock and supporting facilities is currently being accelerated. All supporting facilities for the carrier’s docking are under development, including the dock itself, which will be widened and lengthened to meet the standard length of approximately 500 to 600 metres. The Indonesian Navy is preparing the Lampung Naval Base as a berthing location for the Giuseppe Garibaldi due to several considerations, including its strategic location. The Director General of Defence Strength at the Ministry of Defence, Air Vice-Marshal Hendrikus Haris Haryanto, announced that the aircraft carrier will arrive in the country on 20 September 2026. To prepare for its arrival, the Navy has dispatched 100 personnel to Italy for training to become the carrier’s crew, covering both theoretical and practical instruction to enable them to operate the vessel from Italy to Indonesia. The Navy is also preparing several sites to serve as the carrier’s base, including one in Teluk Ratai, Lampung, where the construction process has reportedly reached 76 percent.
