Lampung Governor: TNWK Barrier Permanent Solution to Wildlife Conflict
Bandarlampung - Lampung Governor Rahmat Mirzani Djausal stated that constructing barriers at Taman Nasional Way Kambas (TNWK) serves as a permanent solution to resolve conflicts between wild animals and local communities.
“We proposed requesting assistance from the central government to separate the Taman Nasional Way Kambas area from surrounding villages in November 2023, as this conflict has persisted for quite some time,” said Rahmat Mirzani Djausal in East Lampung on Thursday.
He explained that initially, the local government, along with various parties, proposed building barriers only along 11 kilometres.
“This ongoing conflict between humans and wild animals has dragged on, so the President determined that 11 kilometres would not resolve the problem, ultimately increasing the barrier length to 138 kilometres,” he said.
“Yes, this becomes a permanent solution to the wildlife-human conflicts at Taman Nasional Way Kambas. We are very grateful to the President for paying attention to wildlife conservation and the welfare of the people in Lampung, especially at Taman Nasional Way Kambas among other national parks,” he added.
According to him, with the construction of these barriers, economic growth in the buffer villages, which had previously been hampered, will resume.
“Therefore, it is also important to have support from the buffer village communities to ensure that wildlife conservation remains maintained,” he concluded.
