Lamongan Regency Deploys 15 Pumps to Tackle Bengawan Jero Flooding
Lamongan, East Java (ANTARA) — The Lamongan Regency government in East Java has deployed 15 water pump units in an effort to expedite flood relief following the overflow of the Bengawan Jero river, which continues to inundate a number of villages in the area.
Lamongan Regent Yuhronur Efendi said on Wednesday that the optimisation of pump operations was being carried out in coordination with the Bengawan Solo River Basin Authority (BBWS Bengawan Solo), the East Java Provincial Public Works and Water Resources Agency (PU SDA), and the East Java Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD).
"The difference in water levels between the outer and inner Kuro is still around one metre, so we have closed the outer Kuro gate and are maximising water discharge using pumps. We hope the weather cooperates so that the water flow decreases soon," he said.
According to data from the Lamongan Water Resources and Construction Development Agency (SDABK), the 15 activated pumps comprise two sibel pumps with a capacity of 2,000 litres per second each, one axial pump with a capacity of 1,000 litres per second, two electric pumps with a capacity of 500 litres per second each, and two trailer pumps with a capacity of 250 litres per second each.
In addition, six mobile pumps with a capacity of 250 litres per second each and two melik pumps with a capacity of 500 litres per second each have been deployed.
Yuhronur explained that all the pumps are operated for approximately 14 hours per day, from 07:00 to 22:00 Western Indonesian Time (WIB), with the total volume of water discharged reaching 388,800 cubic metres.
"We hope that with the additional pumps, even more water can be discharged. We continue to work to accelerate water removal and hope the weather cooperates," he said.
He added that besides optimising pump operations, the regency government is also gradually opening the Gondang Reservoir in Sugio District to reduce the water burden and channel it into smaller surrounding reservoirs to minimise the impact of flooding.
Food aid packages for flood-affected residents are also continuing to be distributed through the early days of Ramadan in Sidomulyo Village, Deket District, as well as Soko Village and Blawi Village in Karangbinangun District.
