Tourism development in the Lake Toba area cannot be pursued in isolation. Strong inter-regional collaboration is essential to ensure the economic benefits of this sector are evenly distributed across all levels of society in North Sumatra.

This was emphasised by the Deputy Regent of Samosir, Ariston Tua Sidauruk, during a courtesy visit from Medan’s Deputy Mayor Zakiyuddin Harahap in Samosir. The meeting was a key opportunity to build synergy between the destination area and supporting regions, which also serve as the main gateway for tourists.

“We welcome the presence of Medan’s Deputy Mayor in Samosir. Such meetings are crucial for fostering inter-regional collaboration, particularly in supporting tourism development and improving community livelihoods,” Ariston stated in an official release received on Tuesday (26 May).

Ariston explained that the Samosir Regional Government is committed to ongoing infrastructure improvements and tourism area management. These steps aim to enhance the comfort of visitors to the ‘Piece of Heaven’ region.

He added that tourism progress in Samosir would have a domino effect on other parts of North Sumatra. “Lake Toba tourism must grow together. When Samosir advances, other regions in North Sumatra also move forward. Collaboration is key to ensuring the tourism sector delivers widespread economic impact,” he said.

During the same meeting, Medan’s Deputy Mayor Zakiyuddin Harahap expressed admiration for the significant transformation in Samosir over recent years. He highlighted the improved tourism support facilities, now far more representative.

“I’ve noticed many changes in Samosir. Hotels are getting better, even with star-rated accommodations. I was also shown the Waterfront Pangururan, which attracts thousands of visitors,” Zakiyuddin said.

He noted that Samosir’s rapid development directly benefits Medan. As the main gateway and transit hub for tourists in North Sumatra, Medan will gain positive impacts from increased visitor numbers to Lake Toba.

“I hope more tourists visit Samosir. If visitor numbers rise there, Medan will also benefit as the transit area and central hub for tourist movements,” he concluded.
