Laka Lena Demands Thorough Investigation into Intimidation Case of Doctor Icha by Three TTU DPRD Members
The Governor of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), Emanuel Melkiades Laka Lena, has urged that the case surrounding the death of Dr. Eliza Princila Utami Pakaenoni, known as Doctor Icha, be investigated thoroughly. The female doctor, who served at Leona General Hospital, died by suicide.
Doctor Icha took her own life after being intimidated by three members of the Timor Tengah Utara (TTU) Regional House of Representatives (DPRD): Veronika Lake of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), Norbertus Bani of the National Awakening Party (PKB), and Thrensius Lazakar of the Golongan Karya Party (Golkar).
“Whoever is involved in this case must be held accountable,” Laka Lena stressed via telephone on Sunday (28/6/2026).
Laka Lena revealed that he had noted the statement from the TTU Police Chief, AKBP Eliana Papote, who said the case of Doctor Icha’s death was under investigation. In line with that statement, Laka Lena requested that the case be processed properly so that the facts become clear.
Furthermore, Laka Lena also emphasised that he would continue to oversee the legal process regarding Doctor Icha’s death to ensure it proceeds transparently and in accordance with regulations. According to Laka Lena, investigators will also explore the possibility of other parties being involved beyond the three DPRD members, based on witness statements.
“The Health Law clearly provides protection for medical personnel and health workers. If they are working according to SOPs, they should not be intimidated or subjected to violence. Anyone who does so can be subject to criminal sanctions,” explained Laka Lena.
The Provincial Government of NTT, Laka Lena clarified, will also coordinate with the TTU District Government. This coordination is intended to strengthen protection for medical personnel and health workers so that similar incidents do not happen again.
On a separate note, Laka Lena disclosed that he had communicated with the three TTU DPRD members suspected of intimidating Doctor Icha. Laka Lena asked them to meet with Doctor Icha’s family so that the matter could be resolved amicably.
The former member of the national House of Representatives also visited Doctor Icha’s family at the funeral home. Laka Lena expressed his deepest condolences on her passing.
