Labour Protest Crowd Disbands in Front of DPR, Traffic on Gatot Subroto in Central Jakarta Flows Smoothly Amid Congestion
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The labour protest crowd disbanded in front of the DPR RI Building, Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Thursday (16/4/2025) afternoon.
Based on monitoring by Kompas.com at the location, around 14:30 WIB, the workers began to disperse using buses and two-wheeled vehicles.
Several buses were seen queuing to pick up passengers and transport the union workers back to their home areas, both in Jakarta, Tangerang, and Bekasi Regency.
Some of the crowd also conducted a long march to the initial gathering point located in front of the TVRI Building on Jalan Gerbang Pemuda.
Suparno stated that although today’s action only lasted until midday, it would continue to escalate until International Labour Day.
“Until 1 May and even until October, as long as our demands for the Manpower Law are not fulfilled by the government and the DPR, FSPMI workers will not hesitate to escalate actions even into the night,” Suparno declared from atop the command vehicle.
After the speeches, the crowd then recited a collective prayer, followed by singing struggle songs to close the action.
Afterwards, hundreds of workers who had arrived in convoy remounted their respective motorcycles, followed by three command vehicles and three other buses that also dispersed.
The area around the front of the DPR RI Building was immediately cleaned by DKI Jakarta PPSU officers who swept up scattered food and drink waste.
Meanwhile, traffic flow was briefly congested again during the crowd’s dispersal process.
After the area around the DPR RI became quiet, traffic on Jalan Gatot Subroto was back to being busy but smooth.
On May Day itself, the number of protesters taking to the streets is certain to be far more massive to press for the ratification of the Manpower Law.
“This is just the pre-May Day; on May Day, we will flood this place, I am certain that FSPMI with around 25,000 will flood in front of the DPR RI,” said Suparno.
