Labour Minister Accelerates Expansion of Employment Social Security Coverage for Non-Wage Workers
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Labour Minister Yassierli is encouraging the expansion of employment social security participation through various policies, such as a 50 per cent discount on contributions for the Work Accident Insurance (JKK) and Death Insurance (JKM) programmes for non-wage workers (BPU) or informal workers.
Yassierli, in his statement in Jakarta on Monday, assessed that this policy is designed to maintain people’s purchasing power while expanding access to social protection amid various economic challenges.
“Through this contribution relief, we want to ensure that more informal workers can be protected. Contributions may be lighter, but the protection benefits remain fully provided,” he said.
Furthermore, he added that social security benefits are not only in the form of compensation but also include long-term protection for workers’ families, including scholarships for children.
Through these various policies, Yassierli continued, the government is affirming its commitment to ensuring that all workers, both formal and informal, receive fair, inclusive, and sustainable social protection.
The government has disbursed social security compensation worth Rp435,624,820 to the heirs of a train accident victim, after the victim was registered as a BPJS Ketenagakerjaan participant in the BPU segment.
The Labour Minister emphasised the importance of social security to protect workers and their families from various risks.
“The heirs of informal sector workers who experienced a work accident received social security benefits totalling more than Rp435 million. This is proof that social protection must be felt by all workers without exception,” said Yassierli.
The compensation was given to Baskoro Aji (31), the husband and heir of the late Tutik Anitasari (31), who was one of the victims of the train accident at Bekasi Timur Station on 29 April 2026.
The deceased left behind a husband and a toddler.
The details of the benefits received include JKK of Rp235,238,400, funeral compensation of Rp10,000,000, Old-Age Security (JHT) of Rp11,886,420, and scholarships for the child worth Rp166,500,000.
The case, Yassierli continued, demonstrates the importance of social security protection for all workers, including the informal sector.
Meanwhile, the President Director of BPJS Ketenagakerjaan, Saiful Hidayat, stated that social security benefits provide certainty of protection for workers’ families when facing risks.
“These benefits ensure that workers’ families still have economic security so they can continue their lives with greater assurance,” said Saiful.
