JAKARTA - President Prabowo Subianto promised a home ownership programme for workers with a tenure or long-term instalment scheme of up to 40 years during the International Labour Day or May Day commemoration at Monas Square, Central Jakarta, on Friday (1/5/2026). In his speech, Prabowo stated that workers could own their own homes through an instalment system adjusted to each individual’s economic capacity. “Brothers and sisters, earlier I said 30 percent of income for house contracts. We will ensure that you will own that house,” Prabowo said while orating in front of thousands of workers. According to Indonesia’s number one official, part of the income previously used for renting a house can be redirected to home ownership instalments. He mentioned that the housing tenure for workers can start from 20 years up to a maximum of 40 years. This scheme is provided so that low-income communities (MBR) can still afford their own homes. “If possible in 20 years, if not 25 years. If not paid off in 25 years, 30 years. If not possible 35 years, 40 years,” he explained. Besides the housing programme, Prabowo also touched on the issue of loan interest rates, which are still burdensome for small communities. He claimed to have instructed state-owned banks to disburse low-interest credit for the people. According to Prabowo, the government will provide credit with a maximum interest rate of 5 percent per year to help the public access lighter financing. “I have ordered the banks owned by the Republic of Indonesia, soon we will pour credit for the people, maximum five percent one year,” he emphasised.
