Labour coalition to submit draft employment law bill to House of Representatives
The Grand Coalition of the Indonesian Labour Struggle has completed the drafting of a proposed Employment Law, which it will submit to the leadership of the House of Representatives (DPR) next week as part of its participation in creating fairer regulations for workers. President of the Confederation of All-Indonesian Workers’ Unions (KSPSI) Andi Gani Nena Wea stated that the coalition finalised the draft after five days of intensive discussion by a formulation team involving all confederation elements. “We will submit the draft Employment Law to the DPR leadership as a form of labour’s participation in the regulatory process,” he said during the inauguration of the Joint Secretariat of the Grand Coalition of the Indonesian Labour Struggle in South Jakarta on Friday. Andi Gani noted that the formation of the joint secretariat marks a historic milestone for the labour movement, aimed at strengthening unity in advocating for the new law and other labour issues. “We have a high awareness that if we are not united, we will lose. Therefore, all confederations agreed to set aside organisational egos and unite in this grand coalition,” he stated. He also expressed appreciation for the National Police Chief, acknowledging his long-standing relationship with the labour movement and his commitment to opening dialogue and assisting in resolving legal issues related to workers’ rights. A dedicated labour desk has successfully resolved 97 cases, involving hundreds of billions of rupiah, which have now been received by the entitled workers. The coalition hopes cooperation with regional police forces can be further enhanced to serve union members. The newly established joint secretariat will operate 24 hours a day as a centre for coordination, communication, and consultation for the leaders of the confederations and federations within the coalition.
