Laborers seek more benefits

PANGKEP, South Sulawesi: About 1,500 daily laborers of PT Semen Tonasa held a demonstration yesterday demanding benefits.

Without specifying the increase, the workers said they wanted a better daily transport and meal allowance from the current Rp 1,000 per day.

They also questioned cuts in their wages for matters such as the state-run social security program PT Jamsostek.

Workers held a noisy protest outside the factory compound, holding placards and banners to express their grievance.

They had not decided yesterday afternoon whether to continue their demonstration today. (30)
