KY Asserts Supreme Court Justice Selection Process is Transparent and Independent

The Judicial Commission (KY) has rejected claims that the selection process for Supreme Court justices and ad hoc judges lacks transparency and is problematic. The KY asserts that the entire selection process is conducted independently, objectively, and can be monitored by the public.

KY member and spokesperson Anita Kadir stated that the commission has announced the 14 names of candidates for Supreme Court justices and ad hoc judges submitted to the House of Representatives (DPR) for approval. The announcement was made at the KY Auditorium in Jakarta on Friday, 7 August.

“The KY ensures that the selection process for Supreme Court justices, ad hoc human rights judges, and ad hoc corruption court judges at the Supreme Court is transparent and independent. Every step of the process has been communicated to the public, allowing them to monitor the selection and follow each stage,” Anita told reporters on Thursday, 13 August.

Anita explained that the KY involves various independent parties and applies strict competency standards at every stage of the selection. The principles of transparency, participation, objectivity, and accountability form the main foundation of the selection committee. “The selection process prioritises the principles of transparency, participation, objectivity, and accountability,” she stressed.

To maintain the integrity of the assessment, the KY implements a blind review system. Through this method, the assessment team does not know the identity of the participants when examining the files, and the passing grade is set before the identities are revealed. “This mechanism helps reduce the potential for bias or special treatment,” she said.

Furthermore, the public is given ample space to provide input regarding the track records and integrity of the candidates. This step is taken to ensure that the candidates proposed to the DPR truly meet the ideal qualifications for the Supreme Court. “The KY ensures that the selected candidates not only meet administrative requirements but are also individuals of integrity and competence, with an unblemished personality, professional, and experienced in the legal field, in accordance with the needs of the Supreme Court,” she concluded.
