Kutoarjo Train Upgraded with Reclining Seats and an Executive Coach
PURWOREJO, Kompas.com — In preparation for the Lebaran 2026 homecoming exodus, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) or KAI, through the Purwokerto Operational Region (Daop 5 Purwokerto), has stepped up services on several outbound trains from Kutoarjo Station. The move aims to enhance passenger comfort during the Lebaran transport period, which is expected to experience a significant surge.
KAI Daop 5 Purwokerto Public Relations Manager, M. As’ad Habibuddin, said the service improvements apply during Lebaran 2026, from 11 March 2026 (H-10) to 1 April 2026 (H+10). One notable improvement concerns the KA Kutojaya Selatan Tambahan service on the Kutoarjo–Kiaracondong route (round trip). Previously the consist used a economy class train with upright seating in an 80-seat configuration; it has now been replaced with a modified New Generation Economy train with 72 seats. With the reduced capacity, there is more space between passengers. In addition, the seats are equipped with reclining backrests, allowing longer journeys to be more comfortable.
‘The modified New Generation Economy train offers extra comfort because the seats can be tilted backwards,’ As’ad explained.
However, during Lebaran 2026, the composition is being changed to a mixed consist, comprising two economy carriages and seven executive carriages. With this composition, the public now has more service class options to suit their needs and budgets.
Overall, during Lebaran 2026, KAI Daop 5 Purwokerto will provide a total of 80,256 seats for outbound trains from Kutoarjo Station. The figure comprises 59,884 seats on regular trains and 20,372 seats on additional trains, namely KA Kutojaya Utara and KA Kutojaya Selatan Tambahan.
The high demand for rail travel is already evident. By Monday afternoon, 2 March 2026, ticket sales for outbound trains from Kutoarjo Station had reached 43,221 tickets, or about 54 percent of total capacity. The figure is expected to rise as the holiday approaches. Therefore, KAI urges the public to plan journeys and book tickets early to obtain the schedule and class they want.
‘We urge the public not to delay ticket purchases so that mudik travel can be well planned,’ said As’ad. ‘This effort is expected to support the smooth flow of Lebaran 2026 mudik and provide a travel experience that is safe, comfortable, and secure for all customers,’ he concluded.
