The Badung Regency Government is continuing efforts to address erosion at Kuta Beach, balancing the need for coastal protection with the restoration of the beach. The Bali-Penida River Basin Agency is carrying out a project to add sand along a stretch extending 125 metres from the shoreline, which is targeted for completion next year.

“We have a dilemma because of the surfers. They want the waves to remain. If we install breakwaters, surfers at Kuta Beach say the waves could disappear. This is still being studied,” Badung Deputy Regent Bagus Alit Sucipta said on Monday (12 October 2026).

The issue has drawn serious attention after Gus Bota, together with the Badung regent and Bali governor, accompanied Indonesia’s fifth president and chair of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) Steering Council, Megawati Soekarnoputri, on a visit to inspect erosion at Kuta Beach on Sunday.

During the visit, Megawati stressed that erosion should be addressed as effectively as possible without damaging the aesthetics of the tourist area.

“Mrs Mega’s instructions were clear: we must deal with this erosion properly without diminishing Kuta’s appeal. The regent and I will also meet and discuss the matter with Kuta’s surfers,” Gus Bota said.

The PDIP politician said the coastline at Kuta Beach curves like a bay, causing sea currents to continually wash away the sand. Because of these geological conditions, replenished sand could be eroded again in the short term unless breakwaters are built.

“If breakwaters are not installed offshore, the sand will be gone and eroded again within two years. Sand replenishment can continue, but that would mean carrying out remedial work repeatedly,” Gus Bota said.

Gus Bota assured residents that the coastal restoration project by the Bali-Penida River Basin Agency would go ahead. The Badung Regency Government has maintained close communication with the central government to ensure the development of the Kuta area proceeds as intended.

“It should be completed next year, although there may be technical obstacles; work stalled for a while. But the project by the River Basin Agency, funded by nearly Rp4 trillion from the central government, to replenish sand along 125 metres should be finished,” Gus Bota said.
