Kusna's Story of Rising and Achieving Independence Through Her Sewing Business
The social rehabilitation programme represents one of the government’s efforts to provide physical, mental, and social assistance to vulnerable groups. Through an integrated approach, this programme aims to help them rise again and restore their dignity as economically independent individuals.
The story of resurgence through psychosocial intervention and economic empowerment is exemplified by Kusna (40), a resident of West Java. She went through a difficult phase in her personal and family life that affected her mental health.
“Kusna has a complex burden. Left by her partner and parents. She couldn’t resolve her burden on her own, kept it bottled up, and eventually it overflowed,” said Juhara Adi in a written statement on Monday (13/4/2026).
Amid limitations, Kusna chose not to give up and sought to reorganise her life. With strong determination, she began relearning to socialise with her family and surrounding community. To regain independence, Kusna pursued sewing as a source of livelihood.
This effort received support from the Ministry of Social Affairs (Kemensos) through the Sentra Abiyoso Cimahi, which provided assistance in the form of an overlock machine.
“I’m happy, delighted to be able to work again. Alhamdulillah, with this assistance, I can continue my work, earn a living, and live properly,” said Kusna.
Thanks to her sewing skills and the support of that production equipment, Kusna can now earn around Rp600,000 to Rp700,000 every month. This achievement is tangible proof of the success of integrated social rehabilitation in promoting economic independence for vulnerable groups.
“Thank you to the Ministry of Social Affairs for providing the sewing machine assistance; may this sewing machine become a source of motivation for continuing work and seeking sustenance,” she expressed.
For Kusna, sewing is more than just a job. This activity also serves as therapy that helps her recover mentally while being a means to prove that she can rise from adversity and lead a more independent life.
