Kurdistan PM Office in Iraq Hit by Two Drones, Iran Denies Involvement

The office of the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in Iraq was targeted by two drones on Monday (17/8). The incident occurred amid escalating conflict involving Iran and the United States in the region.

The KRG Security Agency stated that both drones were launched from Iranian territory. However, no group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. Local authorities reported no casualties in the incident.

Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani strongly condemned the attack on his government headquarters. “I condemn in the strongest terms this reckless and unacceptable attack,” Barzani said, as quoted by Anadolu on Tuesday (18/8).

Responding to the incident, Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Al Zaidi ordered the formation of an investigative committee. The team is tasked with investigating the origin of the drones and the party behind the attack.

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi denied Tehran’s involvement. In a telephone conversation with Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein, Araghchi stressed that his side had no information indicating the attack originated from Iranian territory. In a post on platform X, he described the attack as a reckless act with no justification.

Araghchi also warned Kurdish groups to be alert to the possibility of a “false flag” operation aimed at shifting responsibility to Iran. He recalled the history of good relations between Iran and the Kurds, including assistance during the fight against Saddam Hussein’s regime and the DAESH (ISIS) terrorist group.

The Kurdistan Region of Iraq has frequently been targeted by air strikes in recent years. In July 2025, consecutive drone attacks over four days halted nearly half of crude oil production in the region. Previously, in April 2024, a similar attack on the Khor Mor gas field killed four migrant workers from Yemen.
