Baghdad (ANTARA) - A source from the Kurdistan Democratic Party in Iraq, the largest Kurdish party in the country, told RIA Novosti that Kurdish opposition parties are unarmed and have signed an agreement not to attack Iran.

Earlier on Tuesday, CNN reported, citing several sources, that Iranian Kurdish opposition forces were likely to be involved in a ground operation in the western region of Iran within the next few days. The report also said that the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) was suspected of seeking to arm the Kurdish forces to trigger a popular uprising in Iran.

Meanwhile on Thursday, The Washington Post reported, citing officials, that U.S. President Donald Trump had offered air defence assistance and logistical support to Kurdish forces in Iran. The assistance was said to support their bid to seize territory in the country's west.

“These reports are wholly false and baseless. At present, no Kurdish opposition faction is militarised; they have become political parties,” the source said. They stressed that the faction's members had surrendered their weapons and signed an agreement not to humiliate the Kurdistan Regional Government by attacking Iran.

“They respect the security agreement between Baghdad and Tehran,” the source said. They recalled the weapons were surrendered to the Kurdistan Regional Government, which then handed them to the Iraqi government.

The source acknowledged there is military cooperation between Erbil and Washington regarding restructuring the PMF militiamen, but if the United States were to make such a request, the Kurdistan Regional Government would not agree, as it would violate the constitution.

On February 28, the United States and Israel carried out strikes against targets in Iran, including in Tehran, causing damage and civilian casualties. Iran retaliated with attacks on Israeli territory, as well as against U.S. military bases across the Middle East.

The attack on Iran came amid nuclear talks between Washington and Tehran mediated by Oman in Geneva.
