KuPP Strengthens Synergy to Prevent Torture Through Joint Commitment
The Cooperation for the Prevention of Torture (KuPP) is strengthening synergy across ministries, institutions, and law enforcement officials through the signing of a Joint Commitment Against Torture, as part of efforts to prevent torture practices and reinforce human rights protection in Indonesia. Ombudsman RI Vice Chair Rahmadi Indra stated that preventing torture requires a commitment that is institutionalised in policy, oversight, and daily public service practices. He noted that Indonesia, as a state party to the Convention against Torture, has a moral and legal obligation to ensure there is no room for torture practices across all lines of public service and law enforcement. “With the theme Voices and Commitment for a Torture-Free Indonesia, we affirm that efforts to prevent torture can only succeed if our voices and commitments are united, institutionalised in policy, and realised in the daily practices of state officials,” Rahmadi said at the commemoration of International Day Against Torture in Jakarta. “We recognise that the challenges on the ground are not light, but with strong synergy, coordination, and collaboration between institutions, accompanied by civil society participation and media support, we can build a public service culture that upholds human dignity and human rights principles,” he added. KuPP, which consists of the Ombudsman RI, the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM), the National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan), the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI), the Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK), and the National Commission on Disability (KND), also presented the results of monitoring at six locations on 17–18 June 2026. KuPP recommended strengthening oversight mechanisms, improving the quality of living environments and services, enhancing physical and mental health services, increasing human resource capacity, and refining internal regulations to optimise human rights protection. The signing of the joint commitment was attended by the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), the National Police (Polri), the Attorney General’s Office, the National Narcotics Agency, several ministries, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities as part of strengthening collaboration to prevent torture in Indonesia.
