Kupang still facing water shortages

KUPANG, East Nusa Tenggara: The Kupang administration has failed to draw up a master plan for the supply of clean water and has been ignoring the demands and needs of locals for years, a legislator from the local chapter of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan) said here on Monday.

Gusti Beribe said that the short annual rainy season should not be used as an excuse by the local administration for continuing clean water shortages in the city.

The main problem was that the city administration could not manage the resources available to cope with the water crisis.

"The administration should provide funds for building reservoirs and water installations in strategic locations in the city to channel the water supplied from areas where water pumps have been installed.

"Local officials should pay serious attention to this problem instead of engaging in corruption, and solve the water problem that has been blighting the city annually over the last two decades," he said. --Antara
