Kupang DPRD Member Mokris Lay Immediately Released from Detention After Acquittal Verdict
Member of the Kupang City DPRD, Mokrianus Imanuel Lay alias Mokris, was acquitted by the panel of judges at the Class 1A Kupang District Court in the case of alleged neglect towards his wife and children. Chairman of Mokris Lay’s legal team, Rian Kapitan, explained that following the verdict, the Hanura party politician was immediately released from the Class IIB Kupang Detention Centre on Tuesday (21/4/2025) around 4:00 PM WITA. “We took him home straight away around 4 o’clock. We were still handling the administration at the Class IIB Kupang Detention Centre earlier,” Rian told detikBali on Tuesday. Rian expressed thanks to the public prosecutor (JPU) as the executor of the court decision. According to him, previously the JPU had swiftly handed over the case to the Class 1A Kupang District Court, leading to today’s verdict hearing. “However, the JPU executed it so quickly and freed Mr Mokris from the Class IIB Kupang Detention Centre. So there is a balance,” Rian explained. “Police and prosecutors should not just chase praise and then detain people with reasons that are actually not in accordance with procedural law,” emphasised the lecturer from the Faculty of Law at Artha Wacana Christian University (UKAW) in Kupang. Currently, Rian stated that his side is still coordinating with Mokris to file a pre-trial lawsuit demanding compensation. “There is indeed a door in the form of pre-trial to demand compensation and other efforts, but we are still coordinating with Mr Mokris,” Rian concluded. Previously reported, Mokrianus Imanuel Lay was acquitted by the panel of judges at the Kupang District Court. Mokris was found not proven to have neglected his wife and two children as alleged by the prosecutor. The hearing was led by Chief Judge Harlina Rayes along with two members, namely Olyviarin Rosalinda Taopan and Sisera Semida Naomi Nenohayfeto. Mokris was accompanied by his legal counsel, Rian Kapitan and team. “The defendant Mokrianus Imanuel Lay alias Mokris was not legally and convincingly proven for the alternative charges one through to three,” stated the panel of judges in the hearing on Tuesday.
