REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, KUNINGAN — Local tobacco varieties from Kuningan Regency that have officially received national certification have now increased by two. With this addition, there are now a total of four varieties recognised nationally.

The two newest varieties, Liong and Genjah Lilin, have obtained the Plant Variety Registration Mark (TDVT) from the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Indonesia. This certification complements the two previous varieties, Molegede and Paliken, which were registered earlier in 2024.

The Head of the Food Security and Agriculture Service of Kuningan Regency, Wahyu Hidayah, explained that the certification process demonstrates that the Liong and Genjah Lilin varieties have undergone rigorous technical and administrative verification stages. This includes identification of characteristics, stability, and environmental adaptation.

“These varieties were born from local farmers and have gone through a long process until recognised by the state. This affirms that Kuningan’s agriculture innovation is based on real local strengths,” Wahyu stated on Monday (27/4/2026).

She mentioned that the Liong variety originates from Gewok Village, Garawangi Subdistrict. Meanwhile, Genjah Lilin comes from Sukadana Village, Cibeureum Subdistrict. Molegede and Paliken originate from Karanganyar Village, Darma Subdistrict.

According to Wahyu, the existence of the TDVT certificate provides legal certainty as well as protection for local varieties from potential claims by other parties. “This is very important in preserving local genetic plasma. With clear legal protection, we can encourage the sustainable utilisation of these varieties and provide economic benefits for farmers,” she emphasised.

In the future, the Kuningan Agriculture Service will promote the development of areas based on superior varieties, strengthen seed systems, and provide intensive assistance to farmers. “This certificate is the beginning. Our target is clear: how these varieties become icons of Kuningan’s leading commodities and truly improve farmer welfare,” she asserted.

Separately, the Regent of Kuningan, Dian Rachmat Yanuar, emphasised that this recognition is not merely administrative. It is also a strategic foundation to drive the transformation of the agricultural sector based on local potential.

“This is state legitimisation of Kuningan’s biodiversity wealth. With four certified varieties, we are building a strong foundation so that farmers are not only producers, but elevate to become competitive business actors,” Dian said.
