KSPSI Reveals Reasons for Prabowo Sharing Shirts and Umbrellas at May Day
President of the Confederation of Indonesian Workers’ Unions (KSPSI), Andi Gani Nena Wea, has explained the reasons behind President Prabowo’s gifts of shirts and umbrellas to labour unions during the 2026 May Day celebrations.
He stated that the Head of State provided umbrellas considering the comfort of May Day participants. This is because, in previous May Day events, Prabowo could not bear to see many workers exposed to the scorching sun.
“Priority is given to female workers receiving umbrellas. For male workers, since they are already sturdy and strong, they don’t use umbrellas,” said Andi during a press conference at the 2026 May Day celebrations in the Menteng area, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday, 29 April 2026.
According to him, the shirts and umbrellas were directly designed, including aspects of colour, text, and others, by Prabowo since March. As of today, these gifts will soon be distributed to all labour unions participating in May Day 2026.
In addition to shirts and umbrellas, he continued, the Head of State will also provide special gifts to labour unions. These gifts will be given after the Friday prayer service at the location.
“I emphasise that the costs for this year’s May Day do not use the state budget from any ministry; no state funds are used. All funds used come from good hands,” Andi said.
Previously, President Prabowo Subianto is scheduled to attend the May Day celebration themed “Unbounded Solidarity, Without Barriers, Without Differences, and Struggling Together for Just Welfare of Indonesian Workers” in the Monas area on 1 May.
