KSPSI Reminds Prabowo About the Inauguration of the Marsinah Museum
The Indonesian Confederation of Trade Unions (KSPSI) has requested that President Prabowo Subianto inaugurate the Marsinah Museum during the International Labour Day or May Day commemorations at the National Monument in Central Jakarta on 1 May 2026.
KSPSI President Andi Gani Nena Wea stated that the inauguration of the Marsinah Museum in Nganjuk, East Java, would be an opportune moment on May Day. This is one of three demands presented by KSPSI to Prabowo.
“We remind you, Sir. You have a promise to inaugurate the Marsinah Museum, a symbol of the workers’ struggle in Nganjuk, East Java,” Andi said during a speech alongside other labour union leaders at Monas, Jakarta, on 1 May 2026.
Andi hopes that Prabowo will make time during the May Day events to inaugurate the Marsinah Museum.
KSPSI’s other demands include educational scholarships for labour activists and a workers’ hospital in industrial areas.
Prabowo conferred the National Hero title on Marsinah during a ceremony at the State Palace in Central Jakarta on Monday, 10 November 2025.
Presidential Military Secretary Wahyu Yudhayana read out the decision designating ten names. He stated that the conferral was based on Presidential Decree of the Republic of Indonesia Number 116/TK/Year 2025 on the Conferral of National Hero Titles. “Conferring the National Hero title on those whose names are listed in this decision as a form of appreciation and respect for their extraordinary services to the nation and state,” Wahyu said.
Marsinah was born in Nglundo, East Java, on 10 April 1969. She worked as a labourer at PT Catur Putra Surya (CPS) in Porong, Sidoarjo, and was known as an activist fighting for workers’ rights.
On 3 May 1993, Marsinah led a demonstration at her workplace factory. After the action, police arrested and took her to the Sidoarjo Military District Command Headquarters (Kodim 0816). There, she was allegedly tortured and brutally assaulted until she died. Her body was found on 8 May 1993 in the forest of Jegong Hamlet, Wilangan Village, showing signs of severe torture.
