KSPSI gives DPR until 22 September deadline over Employment Bill
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The All-Indonesian Workers’ Union Confederation (KSPSI) led by Andi Gani Nena Wea has asked that deliberations on the Employment Bill (RUU Ketenagakerjaan) accommodate workers’ interests, setting a deadline of 22 September 2026 for the House of Representatives (DPR RI) to respond to their aspirations.
KSPSI Vice President Ahmad Supriyadi, in a statement in Jakarta on Tuesday, said that if no concrete answer is received by the deadline, the union will hold a peaceful protest in Jakarta on Thursday (24/9).
“If by 22 September we do not receive a concrete answer to our substantive hopes for the Employment Law, then on 24 September we will carry out the action,” he said.
During the protest, KSPSI plans to submit a petition to President Prabowo Subianto regarding the substance of the Employment Bill, which is expected to accommodate workers’ interests.
“We hope President Prabowo Subianto can accommodate our wishes. Mr Prabowo can certainly give input to the DPR RI so that during the deliberation session this law can accommodate our hopes,” he said.
KSPSI is targeting the mobilisation of up to 50,000 motorbikes for the action from a number of areas surrounding Jakarta.
Ahmad said protesters would move towards Jakarta from, among other places, Tangerang Regency, Bekasi Regency and City, Karawang, and Purwakarta.
According to him, the action is planned to be centred on Jalan MH Thamrin in Central Jakarta, around the Grand Indonesia area and the Hotel Indonesia (HI) roundabout.
Ahmad explained that KSPSI deliberately chose not to centre the protest in front of the DPR RI building because parliament is still deliberating the Employment Bill.
“The DPR RI is still deliberating the law. On 16 September we will also be received by the Working Committee of Commission IX of the DPR RI,” he said.
The meeting with the Working Committee (Panja) of Commission IX of the DPR RI is one of the opportunities for workers to convey their aspirations regarding the substance of the Employment Bill.
KSPSI will then await the DPR’s response until 22 September before deciding on the execution of the protest on 24 September.
“Whether the outcome of the deliberations matches our hopes certainly remains a question. That is why we are giving the DPR RI time to give a definite answer by 22 September at the latest,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Coordinator of the Drafting Team for the Employment Bill of the Great Coalition of Indonesian Workers’ Struggle (KBPBI), who is also KSPSI Vice President R. Abdullah, expressed hope that the space for dialogue with the DPR remains open so that workers can provide more comprehensive input.
According to him, a number of provisions in the Employment Bill can still be improved through the deliberation process.
