KSPSI Claims Closeness to Government Does Not Affect Idealism
The Confederation of All-Indonesian Workers’ Unions (KSPSI) claims that the presence of President Prabowo Subianto at the 2026 May Day celebrations in the National Monument area, Central Jakarta, will not impact the dimming of labour integrity.
KSPSI President Andi Gani Nena Wea stated that he has been offered a cabinet position by the government three times. However, these offers were always rejected as a commitment by the workers’ union to maintain the functioning of checks and balances in the government.
“I am close to those in power, but I am also the one who challenged the Omnibus Law,” said Andi during a press conference for the 2026 May Day celebrations in the Menteng area, Wednesday, 29 April 2026.
He recounted that this closeness is with former President Joko Widodo. Andi mentioned that he and Jokowi have known each other for 22 years.
Nevertheless, he said, when the government makes policies that harm the working class, as KSPSI leader, he will be at the forefront in fighting for the rights and welfare of the blue-collar group.
Andi reminded that the relationship between workers and the government cannot always be in a confrontational position. According to him, the government and workers must synergise to create a conducive situation.
“But, we have proven that when there are issues concerning workers’ welfare, we are the ones who sue, we are the ones who fight. So, our labour idealism has never been limited,” he said.
Previously, President Prabowo Subianto is scheduled to attend the 2026 May Day celebrations in the Monas area, Central Jakarta, this Friday, 1 May.
Andi Gani said that in his attendance, the Head of State is said to give a surprise to the workers’ unions. “Related to online ojek, ILO ratification, and labour welfare policies,” said Andi.
In addition to the surprise, he said, Prabowo will also give workers’ unions T-shirts and umbrellas to celebrate May Day later. The T-shirts and umbrellas were designed directly by the Head of State.
He added that the President will also give additional prizes that cannot be mentioned in detail. However, Andi assured that the prizes are not sourced from the state budget.
“His personal budget,” he said.
