KSPI and Labour Party Demand These 8 Things in Pre-May Day Protest
The Confederation of Indonesian Trade Unions (KSPI) and the Labour Party held another demonstration in front of the House of Representatives (DPR) building in Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Thursday (16/4/2026). KSPI President and Labour Party President Said Iqbal emphasised that the workers’ movement today is not limited to Jakarta but is taking place simultaneously across various regions of the archipelago. “Yes, today’s Pre-May Day action is being held in front of the DPR RI building, and this is a simultaneous action across Indonesia,” Said told Kompas.com on Thursday. In today’s action, Said mentioned that there are eight points of demand brought by workers from various trade unions. The first demand is to urge the legislature and executive to immediately enact the Labour Bill to protect workers’ basic rights. “Then our second demand is Hostum, namely abolish outsourcing and reject low wages,” said Said. Threats of layoffs (PHK) triggered by global dynamics and import policies are also in the spotlight. “Third, we ask the government to immediately stop the threat of mass PHK caused by the impact of war and car import policies,” he stated. The workers’ struggle on the streets also voices issues on tax transformation. Workers also demand the immediate enactment of the Domestic Workers Protection Bill (PPRT) and the Asset Seizure Bill. This Pre-May Day action also highlights the fate of ride-hailing partners so that the deduction rate is lowered from 20 percent to 10 percent. Finally, KSPI demands that the government immediately ratify International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention No. 190 on Anti-Violence against Women. Said estimated that around 3,000 to 5,000 workers will attend in waves to voice their aspirations today. “Today’s action will take place peacefully, orderly, and fully within the legal corridor. We have given an official notification letter to the police, in this case Metro Jaya Police,” he said.
