KRL Extension Project to Cikampek Accelerated, Here's the Scoop
The government is continuously promoting the strengthening of rail-based transportation connectivity in the Jabodetabek agglomeration area. One of the projects now being accelerated is the plan to extend the electrification of the KRL line to Cikampek. This step is considered strategic for reducing the daily mobility burden towards Jakarta while promoting balanced growth in the region. Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi emphasised the importance of accelerating the electrification of rail lines in the eastern Jakarta corridor. He stated that this project aligns with the President’s directives on strengthening rail-based mass transportation. “If I am pushing as perhaps friends have followed what Mr President said yesterday, one of them is regarding our railway development, also regarding electrification,” said Dudy, quoted on Friday (10/4/2026). The government views this project as part of a long-term strategy for developing mass transportation. The current main focus is to promote connectivity to supporting areas that have not been optimally served so far. “If I am urging KAI in particular for Cikarang-Cikampek. Cikarang-Cikampek will have a quite significant impact because the Jakarta agglomeration will reach far to Cikampek,” said Dudy. With electrification to Cikampek, the mobility of people in the eastern industrial area is expected to become more efficient. In addition, the density pressure in the city centre could potentially decrease as activities are more evenly distributed. “The movement can help people in Cikampek, especially from Cikarang and Cikampek. And that will also help the Jakarta and surrounding areas to become more spread out,” said Dudy. Meanwhile, the Director General of Railways at the Ministry of Transportation, Allan Tandiono, assured that the technical planning process is being accelerated. He mentioned that the study documents are a crucial stage before the project enters the construction phase. Cross-agency coordination is also ongoing to speed up realisation. “Regarding the electrification from Cikarang to Cikampek, the technical planning documents will also soon begin and will be completed this year. And we will certainly work together with Danantara, PT KAI, PLN to accelerate this electrification process,” said Dudy.
