KRL Commuter Train Delayed Due to Smoke from Passenger's Mobile Phone
The appearance of smoke at Rawa Buntu Station temporarily disrupted the journey of the KRL Rangkasbitung-Tanah Abang route. KAI Commuter has confirmed that the situation is now stable and that the incident was handled swiftly without compromising passenger safety.
“Due to this incident, Commuter Line No 1641 on the Rangkasbitung-Tanah Abang route experienced a delay of approximately 7 minutes,” stated KAI Commuter Public Relations Manager, Leza Arlan, in a statement on Thursday (17/09/2026).
Leza Arlan noted that once the safety of the train set was confirmed, Commuter Line No 1641 resumed its journey.
The incident occurred within the Rangkasbitung-Tanah Abang train set at 06:49 WIB. It took place while the Commuter Line was at Rawa Buntu Station, specifically in the front section of the Women’s Special Carriage.
Leza Arlan explained that security officers on duty on the platform noticed a passenger’s bag emitting smoke. The passenger subsequently threw the bag onto the platform area.
“After being secured by officers according to procedure, two mobile phone units were found in a burnt condition inside the Commuter Line passenger’s bag,” he added.
Officers immediately assisted the passenger in exiting the train and secured the bag containing the smoking gadgets. Staff also advised passengers to remain calm and avoid panic while exiting the train.
Officers subsequently coordinated with the Station Master and the passenger, whose bag was identified as the source of the smoke, to obtain a statement. Based on the information gathered, one of the mobile devices was being used as a hotspot, while both devices were inside the bag.
KAI Commuter is still managing and coordinating the follow-up regarding the incident. KAI Commuter reminds all users to always monitor the condition of mobile phones or other electronic devices carried while using the Commuter Line. Any device experiencing overheating, emitting smoke, or showing abnormal conditions should be secured immediately and reported to officers.
