The train accident tragedy in East Bekasi, West Java, on Monday (27/4/2026), has once again exposed the fragility of safety at level crossings. The incident, which claimed the lives of more than a dozen passengers, serves as a loud alarm for the government to resolve an issue that has persisted for decades but remains unresolved. The Ministry of Transportation revealed that the accident involving the KRL and a long-distance train on Monday (27/4/2026) originated from an incident at level crossing JPL 85. Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi explained that the KRL train on the Bekasi-Cikarang route was hit by an electric taxi at the level crossing. The collision disrupted the journey and caused one KRL set to stop at Bekasi Timur Station. Almost simultaneously, the Argo Bromo Anggrek train failed to stop completely and collided with that set. As a result, 16 passengers died. All the victims were women in the special women’s carriage at the rear. The Ministry of Transportation emphasised that the exact cause of the accident is still awaiting the results of the investigation by the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT). Of that number, 1,903 are not guarded by official personnel. This large figure illustrates the high potential risk of accidents that continues to lurk. In response to the Bekasi incident, the Ministry of Transportation together with PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) assured that they will accelerate the regulation of level crossings throughout Indonesia. “As per the President’s directive, we will carry out the regulation of level crossings. We will expedite it by setting priorities,” said Dudy in his official statement on Thursday (30/4/2026).
