KRL 5568A Briefly Moved 1.69 Metres Before Being Struck by Argo Bromo Anggrek
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Transport Minister Dudy Purwaghandi revealed that the Commuter Line (KRL) KA 5568A on the Jakarta-Cikarang route actually managed to move briefly before it was struck by KA 4B Argo Bromo Anggrek at Bekasi Timur on 27 April 2026. However, the journey of that KRL was halted again due to a crowd of residents along the tracks following the earlier accident.
In a meeting with Commission V of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Dudy explained that the incident began when a taxi stalled on the tracks and was hit by KA 5181B Cikarang-Jakarta at the Bekasi Timur level crossing. “A taxi stalled on the tracks; at 20:48 the 5181B passed through and then there was an altercation with the taxi. A crowd gathered at the scene, viewing the incident or the altercation,” he said.
He noted that before the accident, train services on the Bekasi Timur line were running normally although some trains were delayed. KA 116B Sawunggalih arrived in Bekasi at 20:35 WIB, five minutes late from the schedule, then stopped to pick up passengers before continuing. “Sawunggalih arrived in Bekasi at 20:35, five minutes late. It stopped to pick up passengers. Sawunggalih then passed Bekasi Timur station at 20:39 WIB,” he said.
Meanwhile, KA 5568A Commuter Line on the Jakarta-Cikarang route also experienced delays when departing Bekasi Station towards Bekasi Timur. “KA 5568A was already eight minutes late when departing at 20:45 WIB, at 20:49 WIB KA KRL Jakarta-Cikarang 5568A arrived at Bekasi Timur,” he explained.
Behind this sequence, KA 6066B also entered Bekasi Station. “KA 6066B arrived at Bekasi Station; there is another KRL behind, Sir,” he noted.
According to Dudy, after passenger boarding and alighting, KA 5568A briefly moved from Bekasi Timur but then stopped again due to a crowd along the downstream track watching the incident. “The train did depart but stopped because of a crowd along the downstream track observing the incident,” he said.
Meanwhile, KA 4B Argo Bromo Anggrek, travelling on Gambir–Surabaya Pasar Turi, passed Bekasi Station on track three at high speed. “Then Argo Bromo Anggrek went through Bekasi Station at 20:51, three minutes earlier than schedule, at a speed of 108 km per hour. The collision occurred at 20:52,” she explained.
As a result of the accident, a total of 124 people were affected. Sixteen people died, five are still undergoing treatment, and 103 have returned to their homes.”
The Ministry of Transport, he added, respects the ongoing independent and transparent investigation by the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT).
Meanwhile, KNKT Chairman Soerjanto Tjahjono also shared the details of the journey chronology based on KNKT’s initial investigations, including the movement of KA 5568A before the collision. According to Soerjanto, KA 116 Sawunggalih first entered Bekasi and stopped on platform 3 from 20:34.45 WIB to 20:38.32 WIB for passenger exchanges before continuing eastward. “Next, KA 116 Sawunggalih departed Bekasi Station via platform 3 towards the East,” he said. Then at 20:45.32 WIB, KA 5568 departed Bekasi Station towards Bekasi Timur. “From 20:48.13 to 20:48.29, KA 5568A entered and stopped at Bekasi Timur on platform one upstream,” he added. Simultaneously, the initial crossing incident occurred. “At 20:48.29, the collision between KA 5181 Commuter Line and a four-wheeled vehicle occurred at the Bekasi Timur level crossing on the downstream track. This was at 20:48.29,” he stated.
After passenger exchanges, KA 5568A briefly moved a very short distance before stopping again due to the crowd on the downstream track. “From 20:48.53 to 20:48.59, KA 5568A, after passenger exchanges, moved 1.69 metres and stopped because the driver saw the crowd along the downstream track,” Soerjanto explained. At the same time, KA 4B Argo Bromo Anggrek continued on track three at Bekasi with a green signal. “At 20:50.43, Bromo Anggrek moved on track three with a green signal out of J12, and the collision occurred at 20:52.12.”
In total, 124 people were affected by the tragedy. Sixteen people died, five are still undergoing treatment, and 103 have returned home. The Ministry of Transport, for its part, respects the ongoing, independent investigation by KNKT and will cooperate fully. Soerjanto also noted that KNKT’s timeline places some events before the collision, including 20:34.45–20:38.32 for Sawunggalih’s stop, 20:45.32 for 5568’s departure, and the 20:48.29 crossing incident. The investigation is ongoing.”
