KRI Canopus-936 successfully crosses South Atlantic Ocean route
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Navy’s (TNI AL) latest Hydro-Oceanographic Survey Ship, KRI Canopus-936 (KRI CNP-936), has successfully crossed the South Atlantic Ocean in safe condition.
The journey was undertaken by KRI CNP-936 after departing from the Abeking and Rasmussen shipyard in Germany on 14 March 2026.
“The ship departed from Lagos, Nigeria, last Saturday and successfully crossed the South Atlantic Ocean for 2,600 Nautical Miles (NM) safely, smoothly, and without significant obstacles,” said the Head of the Indonesian Armed Forces Information Service (Kadispenal) Tunggul in an official press release received in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Tunggul explained that this success was achieved thanks to good coordination among the crew and the expertise of the Commander of KRI CNP-936, Colonel Laut (P) Indragiri Yani W.
After passing through that route, KRI CNP-936 anchored at Cape Town Port, South Africa, on Monday (13/04) to carry out a maritime diplomacy mission.
The arrival of KRI CNP-936 in South Africa was warmly welcomed by the Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia (Konjen RI) in Cape Town, Tudiono, accompanied by the Indonesian Defence Attaché (Athan) in Pretoria and staff.
“Our presence here is part of a larger mission to strengthen maritime cooperation and demonstrate the active role of TNI AL diplomacy on the international stage,” said Commander of KRI CNP-936 Colonel Laut (P) Indragiri Yani W in an official TNI AL press release.
Indragiri and his personnel are scheduled to stay in South Africa for three days to refuel the ship and replenish journey logistics before continuing their voyage to Indonesia.
He hopes this visit can strengthen bilateral relations between Indonesia and South Africa. He also hopes the journey to Indonesia can be completed smoothly and safely.
