Kremlin: Prabowo Likely to Meet Putin in Russia, Hunting for Oil?

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - President Prabowo is likely to visit Russia in the near future. This is also linked to the efforts of many countries seeking to purchase oil from that nation.

Quoting Reuters on Thursday (9/4/2026), Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that Prabowo may visit Russia and hold a meeting with President Vladimir Putin. The exact timing has not been explained, but according to Dmitry, an announcement will be made in due course.

Additionally, it was explained that the Kremlin is receiving substantial energy requests from various countries, amid the ongoing energy crisis.

When asked about the purpose of Prabowo’s visit to Moscow, Peskov said that contacts between the two leaders are being prepared.

Meanwhile, around 20% to 25% of Indonesia’s crude oil imports come from the Middle East, and the government has stated it will increase imports from other places such as Angola and Nigeria to ensure sufficient domestic supply.

Previously, President Prabowo Subianto responded to criticism regarding his frequent overseas duties. He emphasised that these foreign activities are aimed at securing national interests, including ensuring oil supplies at a time when the world is facing an energy crisis.

Prabowo stated that the government is highly focused on efforts to maintain domestic oil supplies. He also revealed plans for overseas trips to obtain oil supplies.

“So I have to work now, no holidays. People say Prabowo likes travelling abroad, brothers, to secure oil, I have to go everywhere. We went to Japan the other day, right? We got this, I’m leaving again, I’m going to leave again to a certain country, later when I leave you’ll know where, to secure it too,” Prabowo asserted during a briefing at the Government Working Meeting with Members of the Red and White Cabinet Along with All Echelon I Officials of Ministries/Institutions & CEOs of State-Owned Enterprises, Merdeka Palace, Wednesday (8/4/2026).
