Kramat Jati prioritises organic waste bin distribution in residential areas

Kramat Jati District is prioritising the distribution of organic and inorganic waste bins across residential areas to strengthen source separation of waste. ‘Village officials are directing RW heads to place bins in strategic residential locations,’ said Kramat Jati District Head Kamal Alatas in Jakarta on Monday. Bins are being placed in strategic locations for easy public access and to encourage residents to separate household waste. Kamal stated that waste separation infrastructure in the area is operational and adequately supporting source management programs. However, current facilities remain limited and do not yet cover all RT and RW neighbourhoods. ‘Overall, the infrastructure is in place, but supply is still insufficient to cover the entire area,’ Kamal added. He explained that several villages in Kramat Jati have received separate waste bins from East Jakarta’s Environment Service. Each area received four organic and inorganic waste bins to support household waste separation. Community support is also emerging, with RT heads independently providing bins in their respective neighbourhoods. Kamal said limited bin availability necessitates phased distribution, prioritising strategic residential locations. The Environment Service is coordinating with district and village authorities to distribute waste processing infrastructure. After receiving the infrastructure, village officials and neighbourhood leaders determine optimal placement points to serve residents’ needs. Source separation is a key step in reducing waste sent to landfill. ‘Separating organic and inorganic waste at household level makes waste management easier and more efficient,’ he said. Kamal hopes the separate bins will raise awareness of environmentally friendly waste management, with active community participation being crucial for the program’s success. Previously, East Jakarta Mayor Munjirin urged RT and RW leaders to prepare waste separation facilities independently to support source management programs. ‘As we move forward, I will instruct RT/RW heads, district heads, and village heads not to let this be a barrier,’ Munjirin said while inspecting organic waste processing at Kramat Jati Market, East Jakarta, on Monday, 11 May. He added that limited facilities should not hinder the implementation of organic and inorganic waste separation in residential areas, urging district heads, village heads, and neighbourhood leaders to implement simple measures while awaiting adequate infrastructure.
