Krakatoa Ash Reaches Jakarta, Pramono Urges Residents to Implement 5M Protocol
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has issued an appeal to all residents of the capital in response to the spread of volcanic ash from the eruption of Anak Krakatau, which has begun to reach the Jakarta region.
In a video uploaded via his official account, Pramono requested that the public increase vigilance and prioritise the health and safety of themselves and their families.
“If your area begins to be affected by volcanic ash, implement the 5M protocol. Stay vigilant, protect yourself and your family, let us protect Jakarta together,” said Pramono, as reported on Sunday (6/9/2026).
The implementation of the 5M protocol intended to address volcanic ash exposure includes:
Wearing masks when performing outdoor activities to protect the respiratory tract from sharp volcanic dust particles.
Using eye protection (such as goggles) to avoid irritation or stinging caused by the dust.
Limiting outdoor activities if not urgent, considering that the spread of ash can trigger health issues such as acute respiratory infections (ISPA) and skin irritation.
Closely covering clean water sources and food at home to prevent contamination by ash deposits.
Regularly washing skin or vehicles that have been exposed to volcanic ash.
Pramono stated that the Jakarta Provincial Government continues to coordinate intensively with the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) and the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) to monitor air quality in real-time. Residents are urged to remain calm, avoid panic, and continue to monitor official information updates from government agencies.
