PT Krakatau Posco has partnered with the Environmental Services Agency (DLH) of Cilegon City to strengthen regional infrastructure through the use of innovative sustainable materials. Approximately 1,000 tonnes of steel slag has been allocated to reinforce Kranggot Road, a main access route to the Kranggot waste disposal site (TPS).

This initiative represents a tangible contribution from the company in supporting regional development whilst implementing circular economy principles. Through this approach, by-products from steel production processes are repurposed as resources with practical value for communities.

Alhadis Syamsuddin, Director of Technology and Business Development at Krakatau Posco, explained that the utilisation of steel slag forms part of the company’s strategic efforts to promote circular economy adoption in the industrial sector.

“The use of steel slag as a construction material is part of Krakatau Posco’s endeavour to optimise production by-products to deliver added value for communities and the environment. Through collaboration with Cilegon City Government, we hope this material innovation will support stronger and more sustainable infrastructure development,” Alhadis stated.

He further noted that Krakatau Posco continues to drive innovation in utilising materials derived from production processes to deliver broader benefits for regional development.

“We believe that synergy between the industrial sector and local government is key to creating development solutions that are not only technically efficient but also aligned with sustainability principles,” he added.

The use of steel slag aligns with increasing global demands for more sustainable industrial practices. As the transition towards green industry accelerates, responsible management of production waste has become an important part of applying Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles. Krakatau Posco seeks to optimise its production by-products to reduce potential environmental impacts whilst delivering tangible benefits for infrastructure development.

Technically, steel slag possesses strong and stable material characteristics, making it well-suited for road reinforcement. Kranggot Road is traversed daily by heavy-load waste transport fleets heading to the disposal site, requiring a road structure with high bearing capacity to remain resilient despite intensive operational vehicle traffic. Compared to natural aggregates, steel slag offers superior strength and can help minimise potential road damage.
