KPU Studies E-Voting for Overseas Voters in 2029 Election
The General Elections Commission (KPU) is studying the potential use of an electronic voting (e-voting) system for overseas voters in the 2029 General Election, as part of a broader strategic review of electoral information system development. KPU Chairman Afifuddin stated during a hearing with Commission II of the House of Representatives (DPR) at the parliament complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Monday (15/6/2026) that any such development would require adjustments to the existing law. “There is a proposal to develop the KPU’s information system to support election stages in 2027, but we must wait for the necessary legal adjustments,” Afifuddin said. To support the information technology development, the KPU requires a budget of approximately Rp 12 billion. He then raised the possibility of implementing e-voting for overseas voters in the 2029 election, contingent on approval from the lawmakers drafting the election law. The proposal is based on an evaluation of past elections, particularly the repeat voting that occurred in Kuala Lumpur, with the aim of improving future electoral processes. “This is a reflection for us, especially regarding elections abroad, such as the one we had to repeat in Kuala Lumpur. Previous elections also had similar, though not identical, incidents,” he added.
