Jakarta — Central Java has emerged as the focus of numerous sting operations by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in recent months, with three regional heads from the province arrested since the beginning of 2026.

The arrested officials include Pati Regent Sudewo, who was detained on Tuesday 20 January 2026 in connection with extortion allegations related to village administrative position appointments. Most recently, Cilacap Regent Syamsul Auliya Rachman was arrested on Friday 13 March 2026 on suspicion of extortion involving festive allowance funds for Eid al-Fitr 2026.

The KPK has denied targeting specific regions in its operations. “We are not interested in any particular region. What interests us are individuals — specifically regional heads who have complaints filed against us,” said KPK Deputy for Prosecution and Execution Asep Guntur Rahayu during a press conference at KPK’s headquarters on Saturday 14 March 2026.

Another case involved Rejang Lebong Regent Muhammad Fikri Thobari, designated as a suspect in an alleged bribery case related to project corruption at Rejang Lebong municipal administration for the 2025-2026 period. Thobari was arrested on Monday evening 9 March 2026.

Rahayu referenced warnings from Central Java Governor Ahmad Luthfi regarding the increasing number of regents in his province facing KPK operations. “The Governor warned us, we warned them, but they did not listen,” said Asep. “There is no bias towards any region, but we will act against regional heads who commit corruption,” he emphasised.

Zaenur Rohman, a researcher at the Anti-Corruption Studies Centre at Gadjah Mada University’s Law Faculty, suggested that the arrest of three Central Java regents indicates governance problems in the region. “I am not saying other regions are clean — they may not be — but at least the sting operations conducted by the KPK in several Central Java districts demonstrate that Central Java has governance management problems,” Zaenur said.
