KPK's Decision to Place Yaqut Under House Arrest Leads to Report to Dewas
The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has designated former Minister of Religious Affairs, Yaqut Cholil Qoumas, as a house detainee in the alleged corruption case concerning the 2023–2024 hajj quota. This decision has sparked public attention, as it is seen as differing from the usual procedure of detaining suspects in a corruption prevention institution’s detention centre for those in good health. Despite criticism regarding the transparency of the legal process, KPK asserts that the change in detention status adheres to regulations and considers various technical aspects of the investigation. Currently, Yaqut officially holds the status of a suspect for alleged abuse of authority in managing the national hajj quota for 2023-2024. The legal basis cited is the procedure referring to Articles 108 paragraphs 1 to 11 of the Criminal Procedure Code (KUHAP) under Law No. 20 of 2025. “In Law No. 20 of 2025 or the new KUHAP, it is regulated in Article 108, with paragraphs 1 to 11, so that is the legal norm,” he said. Another basis is the meeting of KPK leaders who decided that Yaqut could reside at home as KPK detainee status. Yaqut breathed home air with an orange vest on 19 March 2026 upon the family’s request and returned to KPK on 23 March 2026.
