The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has confirmed that the investigation into the alleged corruption of the hajj quota continues, even though suspect Yaqut Cholil Qoumas is currently undergoing medical treatment at the National Police Hospital. KPK Spokesperson Budi Prasetyo stated that a medical team performed a procedure on Yaqut on Monday (29/6) after his detention was transferred from the KPK Detention Centre to the hospital. ‘For the development of YCQ’s health condition, on Monday (29/6), a medical procedure was carried out by the team of doctors,’ Budi Prasetyo told reporters in Jakarta on Tuesday (26/6). He added that investigators continue to monitor the former Minister of Religious Affairs’ health while waiting for his condition to improve so that the legal process can continue. ‘We hope his health condition gets better. Investigators continue to monitor his condition,’ he said. The hajj quota corruption case is one of the major cases handled by the KPK in the hajj management sector. The investigation began on 9 August 2025 before the KPK named Yaqut and his former special staff member, Ishfah Abidal Aziz, also known as Gus Alex, as suspects on 9 January 2026. The investigation gained momentum after the KPK received an audit report from the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) on 24 February 2026. The audit indicated that the alleged corruption in the management of Indonesia’s hajj quota for 2023–2024 could result in state losses of Rp622 billion. Yaqut was subsequently detained at the KPK’s Merah Putih Detention Centre on 12 March 2026, while Ishfah began his detention five days later. During the legal process, Yaqut’s detention status was briefly changed to house arrest on 19 March 2026 at his family’s request, but he was returned to the detention centre five days later. The investigation expanded on 30 March 2026 with the naming of two new suspects: Maktour Operational Director Ismail Adham and former Chairman of the Indonesian Hajj and Umrah Travel Organisers Association (Kesthuri), Asrul Aziz Taba. Both were officially detained on 8 June 2026. Most recently, on 24 June 2026, the KPK transferred Yaqut’s detention to the National Police Hospital after he experienced digestive tract issues. The anti-corruption agency maintains that it will continue to monitor his health while ensuring the investigation proceeds in accordance with the law.
