The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has found a layering system in the alleged manipulation of new student admissions at Jenderal Soedirman University (Unsoed).

The alleged corruption case was uncovered by the KPK through a sting operation in Purwokerto and Jakarta on Thursday (20/8). Unsoed Rector Akhmad Sodiq was among those caught in Jakarta.

“Regarding the alleged receipt of funds by state officials within Unsoed, or Jenderal Soedirman University in Purwokerto, it is suspected to be related to student admissions, including at the Faculty of Medicine,” said KPK Spokesperson Budi Prasetyo at the Merah Putih Building in Jakarta on Friday (21/8).

“And indeed there was a sum of money worth hundreds of millions of rupiah to gain admission as a student at the Faculty of Medicine there, and it is suspected that there was layering in those receipts,” he continued.

In the sting operation in the Purwokerto and Jakarta areas on Thursday (20/8), Central Java, the KPK arrested 14 people. Twelve people were arrested in Purwokerto and two others in Jakarta.

“One of the parties detained was the Rector of Unsoed,” said Budi.

Budi said the two people arrested in Jakarta were immediately subjected to intensive questioning at the KPK’s Merah Putih Building.

Meanwhile, the 12 people detained in Purwokerto underwent initial examination at the Banyumas Police Station. Subsequently, seven others were taken to Jakarta for further questioning.

“So that as of now, the parties detained in the series of events of the sting operation and who are undergoing questioning at the KPK total nine people,” he said.

“As for the evidence seized, among others, cash amounting to hundreds of millions of rupiah,” Budi continued.

The KPK regrets the alleged corruption in the education sector because it can have a major impact on the inculcation of values and character.

“Moreover, the alleged corruption occurred during the initial admission process. This means that transactions were already taking place when new students opened the gates to enter the campus. Gates that should be the gateway to the nation’s aspirations and future,” said Budi.

The KPK plans to hold a press conference this afternoon to convey the chronology of the sting operation and the complete construction of the alleged corruption case.
