KPK Transfers Yaqut Cholil's Case Files to Prosecutors in Hajj Quota Corruption Case

The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has transferred the case files, evidence, and suspects in the alleged corruption case concerning the 2023–2024 Hajj quota to public prosecutors. KPK spokesperson Budi Prasetyo stated that the handover signifies the completion of the investigation and the case’s progression to the prosecution stage. The public prosecutor now has a maximum of 14 days to prepare and submit the indictment to the corruption court. The KPK initiated the investigation into the alleged corruption of Indonesia’s Hajj quota on 9 August 2025. On 9 January 2026, the KPK named former Minister of Religious Affairs Yaqut Cholil Qoumas and his former special staff member, Ishfah Abidal Aziz, also known as Gus Alex, as suspects. Fuad Hasan Mubarok, the owner of the Hajj organiser Maktour, was not named a suspect despite being placed on a travel ban. The KPK later received an audit report from the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) on 24 February 2026, which stated that the potential state losses in the case amounted to Rp622 billion. Yaqut was detained at the KPK’s Red and White Building detention centre on 12 March 2026, while Ishfah was detained five days later. Yaqut’s detention status was briefly changed to house arrest on 19 March 2026 following a family request, but he was returned to the KPK detention centre on 24 March 2026. As the case developed, the KPK named two additional suspects on 30 March 2026: Maktour Operational Director Ismail Adham and former Chairman of the Indonesian Hajj and Umrah Travel Association (Kesthuri) Asrul Aziz Taba. Both were subsequently detained on 8 June 2026. On 24 June 2026, the KPK suspended Yaqut’s detention and transferred him to the National Police Hospital after he experienced digestive health issues. The KPK re-detained Yaqut on 9 July 2026.
